What is Kathak?

Where the form comes from, and what it asks of you.

  • What is Kathak

01

Begin With Nawaskar

Every class opens the same way. Before a single beat is counted, the dancer greets the floor, the guru and the audience.

Nawaskar forms part of the foundational opening practice in the learning journey. The handwritten curriculum notes it as Nawaskar / Bhoomi Parnam , and marks the importance of Nawaskar in classical dance as the first thing a student is taught.

02

Tatkar

Feel The Rhythm.

Footwork is where Kathak is built. Everything else sits on top of it.

ता · थेई · थेई · तत् — the basic Tatkar count

  • Basic Tatkar
  • 3 variations
  • Rhythm
  • Foot coordination
  • Control

03

Chakkar

Grace in Every Turn.

Rounds are taught slowly first — spotting, posture, and a still centre — then opened up into speed.

  • Basic Chakkar
  • 3 variations
  • Balance
  • Control
  • Precision

04

Hastak

The Language of the Hands. 8 types of Hastak are covered in the course.

Drag or swipe to move through the eight positions.

05

Tihai

Repeat. Resolve. Arrive on the Sam.

1 2 3 सम

As written in the course notes: a type of footwork that repeats three times. The phrase is played three times over and resolves on the appropriate beat, landing back on the first beat of the cycle — the sam.

4–5 Tihai variations are taught in the course.

06

Discover The World of Taal

Taal is the cycle a composition lives inside. Once you can feel the cycle, you stop counting and start dancing.

  • Introductory knowledge of Taal
  • Laya — the speed of the cycle
  • Rhythmic cycles and how they repeat
  • Joining movement to rhythm

Kept beginner-friendly. No prior music training needed.

One cycle, repeating — that is taal.

07

Learn To Speak Through Rhythm

Tukre — short, fixed compositions with a beginning and a landing.

A Tukra is a small rhythmic composition, set inside the taal and finished on the sam. It is the first piece most students perform: short enough to hold in your head, demanding enough to show whether your footwork and your counting agree with each other.

  • Basic Tukra
  • Rhythmic composition
  • Presentation
  • Connection with Taal

08

Understand The Art Behind The Dance

Kathak is one of the classical dance forms of India, built on rhythm and storytelling. The name comes from the katha — the story. A Kathak dancer counts, keeps and plays with a rhythmic cycle, and uses footwork, spins and hand movement to tell that story.

The course covers the theoretical knowledge behind the key terms of Kathak, so that the words used in class stop being unfamiliar sounds and start being tools you can use.
